Gwent Probation

Probation Works

This section will outline the main areas of our work with offenders. It provides details for people who work with probation services, such as magistrates, court staff and voluntary agencies.

Court Reports

Written by probation staff for use in courts. About people who are charged with an offence. Help magistrates and judges make decisions on punishments.

Orders

Made by the courts when someone is found guilty of an offence. Details people's punishment in the community - probation supervision, unpaid work to benefit the community and drug treatment & testing.

Accredited programmes

Courses for people who keep committing offences. They can stop people from offending again. Work to change the way people think and act.

Tagging

A way of restricting liberty - rather like 'house arrest'. An electronic 'tag' is attached to the wrist or ankle. Can give people a new sense of structure and discipline in their life.

Prisons

Work with prisoners to prepare them for release back into the community. Providing reports to help Prison Governors make decisions about people's release. Supervision for prisoners on their release back into the community.

Hostels

For people needing extra supervision by probation staff when serving their sentence while living in the community. Includes people on bail or on their release from prison.

Diversity

Gwent Probation Area is committed to inclusiveness, equality and fairness, without which simple justice is not possible.

Other Services

Support services which assist offenders in living crime-free lives. Services for victims and work with serious crime.

We work to ensure people complete their punishments in the community - and take them back to court for further sentencing if not.

We also work to stop people committing further offences because many people continue to commit further crime.
