Gwent Probation Area's Research unit has compiled over 20 reports since it was formed and currently has 2 research officers. Research has been undertaken into many different areas of probation including:

Introduction to Customer Care

The study was devised to ascertain the views from offenders in respect of the reception area at the East Gwent Probation Office and the service received by offenders from the clerical officers.

Programme Attrition

The current study provides an in-depth evaluation into high levels of attrition from accredited programmes. Three major areas are addressed within the study.

Offender Feedback of ETS - An Evaluation

The first accredited general offending behaviour programme rolled out in Gwent was the Enhanced Thinking Skills (ETS) programme.

Why do people continue to commit crimes?

Research shows that the main causes are:

• weak problem solving skills
  
• poor decision making skills
  
• weak personal control
  
• poor social skills
